Senior Software Engineer - Agentic AI Platform
P-1 AI
11-50
$200,000 – $250,000
United States
Full-time
Remote
false
About P-1 AI:We are building an engineering AGI. We founded P-1 AI with the conviction that the greatest impact of artificial intelligence will be on the built world. Our first product is Archie, an AI engineer capable of quantitative intuition over physical product domains and engineering tool use. Archie initially performs at the level of an entry-level design engineer but rapidly gets smarter and more capable. We aim to put an Archie on every engineering team at every industrial company on earth. Our founding team includes the top minds in deep learning, model-based engineering, and industries that are our customers. We closed a $23 million seed round led by Radical Ventures that includes a number of other AI and industrial luminaries (from OpenAI, DeepMind, etc.).About the role:
We’re a small team tackling an ambitious problem. At the core of our solution is an intelligent, agentic platform that acts as a tireless teammate which can perform all of the same actions that human engineers can, from developing an intuition about the company’s products and the physics at play in their design, to accessing and using information systems, to decomposing performance requirements and developing them into design solutions. Archie must be scalable, responsive, and competent, and must also be deployable within the corporate networks of our customers so that he can see their most valuable information and do his job well. Our Senior SWE for the Agentic AI Platform will design and implement solutions for these challenges, which range from classic distributed systems, integration, and security work, to robustly implementing advanced intelligence features developed by our AI research team. Ownership comes by default, but as Archie becomes more sophisticated we also have potential growth into technical leadership for specific specialty areas. This role can be either remote (based in US or Canada and with existing work authorization) or based in our San Mateo Bay Area office. If you are remote, you should plan to spend one week out of six co-working with the rest of the company in our San Mateo office. We will support relocation for candidates interested in moving to the Bay Area. Why this role:This role is where AI meets reality. Every user that works with Archie will be using features and capabilities that you have built, no matter the industry or context. What you’ll do:Work with our team to understand our Archie capability roadmap and decompose capabilities into technical development.Turn capability prototypes and PoCs from our AI research team into robust, scalable implementations.Diagnose and solve technical problems identified by our team or users.Develop and act on automated platform tests, including traditional software testing, agentic AI evals, and infrastructure.Improve Archie’s scalability and robustness through system architecture design and implementation.Who you are:You’ve consistently taken technical ownership of production-grade software. You’re experienced with application development in Python. You’ve built and implemented data models and database interactions. You develop an obsession with understanding your users’ goals and incorporating this knowledge into your solutions.Take pride in developing quality code and practices. Are aggressively seeking ways to use AI better in your own workflows. Our values:Mission obsession & urgency: We are obsessed with building engineering AGI as quickly as possible. We also recognize that as a startup, speed is our most precious competitive advantage. We are constantly asking ourselves what we can do to go faster. We make tradeoffs and sacrifices (personally and in the workplace) in exchange for speed.Intellectual excellence & curiosity: We ask “what if?” and experiment liberally. We always look for better ways of doing something. We read voraciously. We challenge each other to be better. We surround ourselves with A players and we actively and unapologetically reject B players (and even B+ players⸺because they tend to surround themselves with C players).Shipping discipline: We treat production with respect. We test and demo our product constantly. We listen attentively to our customers, users, and stakeholders, and we respect our commitments to them. We also respect our commitments to each other and will go the extra mile (or ten or one hundred) to honor them.Ownership: We all have significant ownership stakes in the company and operate in founder mode. We believe in hierarchical requirements but not in hierarchical information flows. If we see that something is broken or can be done better, we flag it and we fix it. We encourage each other to play with and fix anything and everything... but there’s a clear owner for everything.Interview process:Initial screening call (30 mins)Biographical/behavioural interview (45 mins)Technical interview (60 mins)CEO interview (30 mins)Compensation:Salary: $200k - $250k.This role includes a significant equity component. We are an early-stage startup, so we favor equity over cash in our current compensation philosophy. This role is best suited for candidates who value long-term ownership and impact over short-term cash optimization. Our benefits include healthcare, dental, and vision insurance, 401k with employer matching, unlimited PTO.

About the teamThe Codex Deployment Engineering team helps customers adopt OpenAI's coding tools throughout their software development lifecycle. We act as trusted technical partners, guiding engineering teams as they integrate Codex into their projects and workflows. Our customers span digital-native companies to global enterprises, and we work side-by-side to accelerate how they plan, build, and deliver software.About the RoleWe are seeking a technically deep, creativity-driven AI Deployment Engineer who is already a power user of AI coding tools and passionate about pushing the boundaries of developer productivity. You will partner directly with engineering leaders and hands-on builders to design, validate, and scale advanced AI workflows, often using Codex to prototype and build the very demos, integrations, and automations customers ultimately adopt. This is a highly cross-functional role that blends technical architecture, product strategy, and customer-facing leadership. You’ll work closely with Sales, Solutions Engineering, Product, Applied Engineering, and the broader Codex organization to advocate for customer needs, shape product direction, and accelerate the successful deployment of intelligent coding systems across some of the world’s most influential companies. In this role, you will:Serve as the primary technical subject matter expert on OpenAI Codex for a portfolio of customers, embedding deeply with them to enable their engineering teams and build coding workflows.Partner directly with customers to design and implement AI-enhanced development workflows, from rapid prototyping through scalable production rollout.Build high-quality demos, reference implementations, and workflow automations, using Codex itself as part of your development process.Lead large-format workshops, technical deep dives, and hands-on enablement sessions that help engineering organizations adopt AI coding tools effectively and safely.Contribute technical content including examples, guides, patterns, and best practices to the OpenAI Cookbook to help the broader developer community accelerate their work with Codex.Gather high-fidelity product insights from real customer deployments and translate them into clear product proposals and model feedback for internal teams.Influence customer strategy and decision-making by framing how AI coding tools fit into their SDLC, technical roadmap, and organizational workflows.Serve as a trusted advisor on solution architecture, operational readiness, model configuration, security considerations, and best-practice adoption. You’ll thrive in this role if you:Have 5+ years of technical consulting, post-sales engineering, solutions architecture, or similar experience working directly with customers. Are an active power user of AI coding tools and have deeply customized your own developer workflow; you have a point of view on what makes engineers more productive.Enjoy building scrappy, high-signal demos, integrations, and prototypes that clearly articulate what Codex can enable, often using Codex to accelerate your own development process.Have experience delivering large, high-impact workshops or technical training to engineering teams and know how to craft sessions that are engaging, hands-on, and outcomes-driven.Have contributed technical guides, patterns, or examples publicly and care about clarity, pedagogy, and community impact.Communicate complex technical concepts in clear, persuasive written and verbal form especially when helping customers make strategic decisions about where and how to apply AI.Are excited by ambiguous, rapidly evolving problem spaces and enjoy iterating toward novel solutions hand-in-hand with customers.Care about customer success, reliability, safety, and operational excellence as much as you care about technical ingenuity.About OpenAIOpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. Evaluation Engineer
Elicit

About ElicitElicit is an AI research platform that uses language models to help researchers figure out what's true and make better decisions, starting with common research tasks like literature review. What we're aiming for:Elicit radically increases the amount of good reasoning in the world. For experts, Elicit pushes the frontier forward. For non-experts, Elicit makes good reasoning more affordable. People who don't have the tools, expertise, time, or mental energy to make well-reasoned decisions on their own can do so with Elicit.Elicit is a scalable ML system based on human-understandable task decompositions, with supervision of process, not outcomes. This expands our collective understanding of safe AGI architectures.Visit our Twitter to learn more about how Elicit is helping researchers and making progress on our mission. The mission of Elicit evalsSome orgs build evals to warn us about dangerous capabilities. Others build evals to understand trends and predict future developments. Yet others build evals to hill-climb towards models that users will like more.At Elicit, we're focused on something different—we want to understand, and hill-climb towards, models that help us make better decisions. This is tougher than "what will users like better"—it's hard to evaluate decision support, and users' knee-jerk reactions may not align with what actually helps for decision-making. Because it's hard, and because the sales pitch is more complicated, there aren't many doing this well. If we nail this, we have a unique opportunity to push AI toward helping us make better decisions, both within Elicit and beyond. Why we're hiring for this roleWe need someone to own the technical foundation of our auto-evaluation systems. Our evals are currently much slower than they need to be, and our interfaces aren't optimized for the diverse set of people who need to use them—ML engineers iterating on models, product managers monitoring quality, and customers assessing trust in results. The right person for this role won't just build infrastructure. You'll think deeply about what it actually means for Elicit to help with decision-making in pharma and encode that understanding into our evaluation systems. What you'll ownThe core auto-eval platformYou'll build a comprehensive system that runs fast, is easy to use, and supports quickly building new evals:Speed: You’ll build a lightning-fast basic evals infrastructure that schedules tasks to introduce practically no latency; and then you’ll figure out clever ways to solve the fundamental sources of latency (building a version of Elicit, running it on a query, and evaluating it using LMs)Interfaces: ML engineers need evals to kick off automatically on relevant commits, with results they can see at a glance and drill into. Product managers need dashboards showing performance over time and what's going wrong in production.Architecture: Your code must be well-architected so other team members and ML engineers can understand and build on it. An engineer starting on a new feature should be able to quickly add examples and run an eval.Ensuring evaluations are accurate and reliableWe need to evaluate how well Elicit actually helps with decision-making in pharma, not just measure what's easy to measure. This requires encoding real knowledge about how pharma customers make decisions (for example, choosing appropriate gold standards). You'll provide appropriate statistical tests and confidence intervals so we can trust our results.A month in your lifeIn a typical month, expect to spend:60% working on the core eval platform15% working closely with the evals team to build and improve specific evals (e.g., an eval of our paper search within our systematic review flow)10% mentoring our evals engineering internThe rest on learning how people interact with the eval system so you can make it work better for them, and understanding what our users want from Elicit so evals measure what mattersWhat you bring to the roleRequirementsAt least 3 years of experience as a professional software engineer, with demonstrated experience building complex backend systems (e.g., backend for a complex website, data pipelines, etc.)Aptitude and interest in evaluating how Elicit helps with pharma decision-making. There's no particular experience you must have, but we'll evaluate your aptitude. Will make you more competitive for the roleKnowledge of statistics (for e.g. calculating power and credence intervals for evals)Experience with advanced Python (asyncio/trio and parallel processing strategies)Front-end experience and strong UX sensibility (you'll be building dashboards). TypeScript experience is a plus.Experience building developer tools (ML engineers are one of your most important clients)Previous experience as a data engineer or working on AI infrastructureKnowledge of pharma/biomedExperience evaluating ML systemsExperience building language-model-based systems (helps with understanding Elicit and how to evaluate it)This is a diverse list of nice-to-haves. We expect the candidate we select to have some, but not all, of these. Other team members can fill in for skills you lack.Location and travelWe have a lovely office in Oakland, CA, but we’re flexible about where you work. You’re welcome to work remotely, from our Oakland headquarters, or in a hybrid setup. The only in-person requirement is attending our quarterly team retreats, typically held on the west coast. Compensation, benefits, and perksIn addition to working on important problems as part of a productive and positive team, we also offer great benefits (with some variation based on location):Flexible work environment: work from our office in Oakland or remotely with time zone overlap (between GMT and GMT-8), as long as you can travel for in-person retreats and coworking eventsFully covered health, dental, vision, and life insurance for you, generous coverage for the rest of your familyFlexible vacation policy, with a minimum recommendation of 20 days/year + company holidays401K with a 6% employer matchA new Mac + $1,000 budget to set up your workstation or home office in your first year, then $500 every year thereafter$1,000 quarterly AI Experimentation & Learning budget, so you can freely experiment with new AI tools, take courses, purchase educational resources, or attend AI-focused conferences and eventsA team administrative assistant who can help you with personal and work tasksFor all roles at Elicit, we use a data-backed compensation framework to keep salaries market-competitive, equitable, and simple to understand. For this role, we target starting ranges of:Career (L3): $140-170k + equitySenior (L4): $165-200k + equity

About The Job
The Applied AI team is Mistral's customer-facing technical organization. We work directly with enterprise clients from pre-sales through implementation to deploy cutting-edge AI solutions that deliver measurable business impact. Our team combines deep ML expertise with strong customer engagement skills, operating like startup CTOs who own end-to-end project execution.
However, the AI graveyard is full of great ideas nobody could measure or prototypes that never made it to production. As a first Evaluation Engineer, you'll design the methodology, build the infrastructure, and define what "ready for production" means across verticals and use cases.
You will design and implement evaluation systems that help our customers understand model performance across their specific use cases, build robust evaluation infrastructure, and work closely with both research and customer-facing teams.
Research builds evals for frontier capabilities but customers don't care about MMLU scores. We need in Applied AI evals and frameworks for customer reality domain-specific, risk-aware, production-grade. The kind that tell you whether your medical summarization model will hallucinate drug interactions, or whether your legal assistant will invent case citations.
This role sits at the intersection of research, engineering, and solutions, you will play a critical cross role in measuring, understanding, and improving the capabilities of our models for our enterprise customers.
What you will do
- Design and implement comprehensive evaluation frameworks to measure LLM capabilities across diverse customer use cases, including text generation, reasoning, code, and domain-specific applications- Build scalable evaluation infrastructure and pipelines that enable rapid, reproducible assessment of model performance- Develop novel evaluation methodologies to assess emerging capabilities or verticalized use cases (cybersecurity, finance, healthcare, etc.) and enable the Solutions (Deployment Strategist and Applied AI) on these topics.- Create custom evaluation suites tailored to enterprise customers' specific needs, working closely with them to understand their requirements and success criteria- Collaborate with research teams to translate evaluation insights into model improvements and training decisions- Partner with product teams to continuously improve our evaluation tooling based on customer feedback
How We Work in Applied AI
- We care about people and outputs. - What matters is what you ship, not the time you spend on it- Bureaucracy is where urgency goes to vanish. You talk to whoever you need to talk to. The best idea wins, whether it comes from a principal engineer or someone in their first week.- Always ask why. The best solutions come from deep understanding, not from copying what worked before- We say what we mean. Feedback is direct, timely, and given because we care. - No politics. Low ego, high standards.- We embrace an unstructured environment and find joy in it.
About you
- You are fluent in English- 3+ years of experience in ML evaluation, benchmarking for LLM or agentic systems- You have proven experience in AI or machine learning product implementation with APIs, back-end- You have deep understanding of concepts and algorithms underlying machine learning and LLMs- You have strong technical coding skills in Python- You hold strong communication skills with an ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple terms with technical and non-technical audiences
Ideally you have:
- Contributions to open-source evaluation frameworks (e.g., LM Eval Harness, OpenAI Evals) or published research on LLM evaluation- Experience as a Customer Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer, Sales Engineer, Solutions Architect or Technical Product Manager- Experience with ML frameworks (PyTorch, HuggingFace Transformers)

Our team combines deep ML expertise with strong customer engagement skills, operating like startup CTOs who own end-to-end project execution.
One of our most important customer isn't external: It's us. We're looking for an engineer to build AI-powered internal tools at Mistral. Your job is to make the company run better by deploying our own models across every team. Think of it as being customer zero. You'll identify automation opportunities, build the solutions, ship them to internal users, and learn from real-world usage. Legal document review, HR onboarding workflows, code review assistants, knowledge search, and support triage are all examples of tasks that save time and improve decision-making.
This role matters for two reasons:
- First, a company that builds AI should be the best at using it our internal operations should be a showcase, not an embarrassment. - Second, every internal deployment is a stress test. You'll find edge cases, discover limitations, and feed those insights directly to product and research. You make our models better by using them.
What you will do
- Identify high-value internal use cases across engineering, legal, HR, sales, and operations- Build or vibe code end-to-end LLM applications: prompts, RAG pipelines, APIs, simple UIs, deployment, and monitoring- Own the full lifecycle: prototype → production → maintenance → iteration- Document learnings and share insights with product and research teams- Convert successful internal tools into customer demos or case studies where appropriate

About the role
We’re hiring an AI Architect to sit at the intersection of frontier AI research, product, and go-to-market. You’ll partner closely with ML teams in high-stakes meetings, scope and pitch solutions to top AI labs, and translate research needs (post-training, evals, alignment) into clear product roadmaps and measurable outcomes. You’ll drive end-to-end delivery—partnering with AI research teams and core customers to scope, pilot, and iterate on frontier model improvements—while coordinating with engineering, ops, and finance to translate cutting-edge research into deployable, high-impact solutions.
What you’ll do
Translate research → product: work with client side researchers on post-training, evals, safety/alignment and build the primitives, data, and tooling they need.
Partner deeply with core customers and frontier labs: work hands-on with leading AI teams and frontier research labs to tackle hard, open-ended technical problems related to frontier model improvement, performance, and deployment.
Shape and propose model improvement work: translate customer and research objectives into clear, technically rigorous proposals—scoping post-training, evaluation, and safety work into well-defined statements of work and execution plans.
Translate research into production impact: collaborate with customer-side researchers on post-training, evaluations, and alignment, and help design the data, primitives, and tooling required to improve frontier models in practice.
Own the end-to-end lifecycle: lead discovery, write crisp PRDs and technical specs, prioritize trade-offs, run experiments, ship initial solutions, and scale successful pilots into durable, repeatable offerings.
Lead complex, high-stakes engagements: independently run technical working sessions with senior customer stakeholders; define success metrics; surface risks early; and drive programs to measurable outcomes.
Partner across Scale: collaborate closely with research (agents, browser/SWE agents), platform, operations, security, and finance to deliver reliable, production-grade results for demanding customers.
Build evaluation rigor at the frontier: design and stand up robust evaluation frameworks (e.g., RLVR, benchmarks), close the loop with data quality and feedback, and share learnings that elevate technical execution across accounts.
You have
Deep technical background in applied AI/ML: 5–10+ years in research, engineering, solutions engineering, or technical product roles working on LLMs or multimodal systems, ideally in high-stakes, customer-facing environments.
Hands-on experience with model improvement workflows: demonstrated experience with post-training techniques, evaluation design, benchmarking, and model quality iteration.
Ability to work on hard, ambiguous technical problems: proven track record of partnering directly with advanced customers or research teams to scope, reason through, and execute on deep technical challenges involving frontier models.
Strong technical fluency: you can read papers, interrogate metrics, write or review complex Python/SQL for analysis, and reason about model-data trade-offs.
Executive presence with world-class researchers and enterprise leaders; excellent writing and storytelling.
Bias to action: you ship, learn, and iterate.
How you’ll work
Customer-obsessed: start from real research needs; prototype quickly; validate with data.
Cross-functional by default: align research, engineering, ops, and GTM on a single plan; communicate clearly up and down.
Field-forward: expect regular customer time and research leads; light travel as needed.
What success looks like
Clear wins with top labs: pilots that convert to scaled programs with strong eval signals.
Reusable alignment & eval building blocks that shorten time-to-value across accounts.
Crisp internal docs (PRDs, experiment readouts, exec updates) that drive decisions quickly.
